Hild Bede D 4 - 4 Gray C
Hild Bede 4ths were cruelly denied a well deserved victory, by a massively
biased second half refereeing performance from a member of Grays college.
Playing some of the best football we've seen from the fourths this year,
Hild deserved the six goals that they actually scored, and not the four
for which they were credited.
Gray started in the kind of form that justified there status of second
in the league, quickly taking a two nil lead within the first twenty
minutes, the second goal being a spectacular 30 yard half volley lob
into his own net, by Paddy. The way things have been going lately for
Bede, the idle spectator almost expected them to lay down and die at
this point. But, rather like Chelsea, Bede raised to the occasion of
a big game against fellow promotion candidates and a goal from Di-Canio
put them back in it.
Then came a great goal from Nick Creek, undoubtedly one of Bedes current
form players. From just outside the box, Creek hit a viciously curling
half volley which left the colossal Gray keeper totally stranded, and
dropped in beautifully for a great equaliser. However moments later,
came agony for Bede and even more agony for Enigma who had to award
a penalty against his own team, when the stand in keeper clipped the
legs of Grays on-rushing striker. The Grays player made a meal of it,
but acting in admirable fairness, Enigma felt it had to be given. Up
stepped the Grays striker, and scored with ease to make it 3-2 at half
time.
Needless to say Enigma wasn't the most popular Hild Bede player at half
time, but Bede came out for the second half firing on all cylinders
and before long Nick Creek scored a second to level matters. Shortly
after, the tables turned completely when the Gray's ref had to give
a penalty against his own side, after a Bede player was tumbled in the
box. That was the only good decision he made all afternoon. Up stepped
captain Tim, and he finished with ease for his second of the game, and
finally Bede had the lead they deserved. It wasn't long before Bede
were dealt another cruel blow, when Molenaar (on loan from Bradford
City), caught a Grays striker in the box. Needless to say he tumbled
to the floor in a fashion even Mr GInola would be proud of, and a spot-kick
was awarded. 4-4. Despite Grays players clearly rushing into the box
before the spot kick wsa taken, the goal stood. Angry Bede players confronted
the ref. for the first time.
Again, this inspired Bede further and they pushed hard to restore their
advantage. Jonas had to go off with a niggling injury, and Enigma was
given an opportunity to overturn the penalty decision he had had to
give earlier in the match. Macca and Enigma then combined to produce
one of the moves of the season. Maccas hard work on the left, gave Enigma
the chance to run at the Gray defence. On the edge of the box, Enigma
squarea to Paddy who hit a fierce shot goalwards which the Grays keeper
could only parry. Hard working Vin pounced on the rebound and budled
it home for 5-4. Or at least, that's what Bede thought. But celebration
turned into frustration and anger, when the Gray ref' chalked the goal
off, because of an apparent offside earlier in the move (according to
a Grays spectator, that is). Tempers boiled over, as Bede players confronted
the referee and the rest of the Gray team, Jonas, watching on the sidelines
was enraged and ran on the pitch to find out just what the hell was
going on, but the decision stood. This merely fired Bede up further
and, as time ticked away, Steve Langstaff knocked the ball goalwards
from a corner kick. The ball was clawed away by the 'keeper, but had
clearly already crossed the line by a good foot. The referee, a good
30 yards from the action claimed he couldn't see it, and therefore it
wasn't going to count.
