Report
Saturday morning, 10:30 am, and Hild Bede 4ths are still half asleep.
Until Johns B give them a sharp wake-up call that is. With the 4ths defence
sleeping, Johns swung in a free kick, which Butts, with his feet seemingly
stuck in the mudbath-like pitch, duly nodded on to the Johns striker,
who scrambled the ball home, after first taking out Hardman in goal. D's
1-0 down, against the team second to bottom of the league, and yet to
win a game. Enigma, is suitaby worried. Although, with the D's having
lost their last three, from one-nil leads, perhaps this was infact a cunning
tactical ploy.
Call it whatever you like, the D's piled on the pressure, and could have
had an early equalizer, had Enigma done better from a half-cleared corner.
Enigma picked his spot, and then missed it. Massively. Oops. Undeterred,
the skipper fought on, and was linking well with the midfield and spreading
the ball wide to Hylands and Macca who were tirelessly serving goal-shy
Strongbow up front. To Strongbows credit, the cider-man was making several
good runs up front, but often found his first touch lacking, and failed
to dispatch a shot on target in the first half. Midway through the first
half Langy - who was dominating the midfield - swung a ball across the
pitch. Enigma deftly flicked it on to Macca who put the ball on a plate
for Hylands to score his 4th of the season - and yet another great goal
it was too!
Bede broke through on several further occasions but were mostly inable
to trouble the Johns keeper, with the notable exception of a superb curling
shot from Langy, heading for the top corner, but tipped over by the Johns
stopper.
So half time arrived with the scores level, and Hild Bede on top.
The fourth teamers started the second half in much the same vein, and
with nearly an hour gone, Macca broke free and slid the ball past the
Johns keeper for 2-1. Pisshead, clearly enraged that Beale had not squared
the ball for him to score, duly took Macca down, mid-celebration, and
the resulting fall left Macca unable to continue.
With Macca off, and Gadsie subbed at half time, Enigma was forced to make
changes, with Clogs pushing up to left wing, and Molenaar - having a good
game at right back, crossing the pitch to play on the left. Varey then
filled the vacant right-back berth. Bede began to stutter and things weren't
working out, so Molenaar was sacrificed for Dodds, to allow Clogs to return
to his favoured left-back, Enigma to switch to left wing, and Moore to
partner Strongbow in attack.
The switch paid off, and Bede again began to pile on the pressure. Had
it not been for a good save from the Johns keeper, it could have been
3-1, when Enigmas chest and half-volley thundered towards the top left
hand corner, but it wasn't to be. With Moore battling hard up-front, Hild
Bede always looked threatening and infact had two penalty appeals turned
down, but failed to capitalise, something which has been their achilles
heal this season. They faced a nervy final five minutes, as Johns continued
to scrap away but, thankfully, the boys in blue held on for a crucial
victory that should secure them a top five finish in what has been a season
of mixed success.
