Grad Soc B 4 - 5 Hild Bede D
Nick Moore made a sensational debut for the 4th team yesterday with a
superb hat-trick to help the 4th team to a stuttering 5-4 win against
Grad Soc B in what was quite possibly the worst collective performance
seen from the fourth team this season. In fairness the fours were reeling
from the loss of influential central midfielder Langy to an ankle injury
- sustained at Rixies, and damaged further falling down the steps outside
a pub - and the rock of central defence - Tom Seymour "Butts"
Taylor. With Enigma dropping himself to the bench, and "Pisshead"
Cochrane deputising for the injured Langy, it was Grad Soc who started
the brighter, scoring an early goal to take a one nil lead. Cochrane nearly
scored a sensational equaliser shortly afterwards, but unfortunately his
shot managed to find the back of Moore, who just couldn't get out of the
way of the close range pile-driver in time. Somehow Bede struggled to
a 2-1 lead - two delightful finishes from Moore, but already Grad Soc
had had enough chances to seal the match, with their pacy foreign striker
skinning Molenaar regularly at the back and Varey caught watching the
ball fly over his head on several occasions. Had the Grad-Soc striker
been able to finish, it could have been an entirely different story.
But before half time approached, Grad Soc B did manage to find the net
and the D's went in at half time at 2-2 with Enigma fuming at his leaky
defence.
The D's soon clawed their way back into the lead, when stand-in captain
Diddy cooly side-footed his 5th goal in 5 games. But Grad Soc weren't
about to give up, and soon equalised for the second time to make it 3-3.
The D's pressed on and Moore sealed his hat-trick, battling to win the
ball before putting the ball past the helpless 'keeper. 4-3, and surely
now the D's would consolidate and hold on for the win. Indeed Vinny had
a couple of chances to extend the lead, but no, again Grad Soc raced through
and equalised. 4-4 and Enigma had had enough, and introduced himself into
the action with 25 minutes left. Enigma nearly got the winner too, as
a half volley, from a Nick Moore cross curled agonisingly wide when it
looked destined for the top corner.
With only ten minutes left and Macca tiring on the left wing, Enigma gambled
and brought on a third striker in the form of Richard James. It turned
out to be an inspirational decision when the super-sub popped up to sidefoot
home, after good work from Diddy, and a good knock on by Moore. Grad Soc
kept the pressure on right to the end, winning two corners in the last
minute, but ten men Bede (Shaun left the pitch with a recurrence of a
calf injury with 5 minutes left), clung on for a vital victory.
Enigma will be hoping the return of Butts will shore up his defence for
the grudge match against Grey C on Wednesday, but in the mean time, it's
another game, another win and another goal-fest for the D's, whose captain
has allegedly pre-booked himself into Dryburn for heart surgery at then
end of the season!!
